Frequently Asked Questions
What’s in the bottle?
WHY CAN’T YOU STATE WHAT AN HERBAL SUPPLEMENT IS GOOD FOR ON THE LABEL OR YOUR WEBSITE?
As an herbal supplement provider, Rich Mountain Health Line adheres to the Food and Drug Administration’s guidelines. Our product labels include a statement directly below the product name that has been substantiated and evaluated by the FDA and clinical research. We are not healthcare providers and do not prescribe supplements. Always consult your healthcare provider before taking any supplements.
Where is the alcohol derived from in your alcohol extracts?
The alcohol used in our liquid extracts is certified organic, pharmaceutical-grade alcohol, derived from corn, sugar cane, or wheat. Any plant proteins that might cause allergic reactions are removed during the distillation phase, ensuring our organic alcohol is gluten-free and allergen-free. The alcohol used in our biodynamic tonics is Demeter Certified Biodynamic® grape alcohol.
WHERE DOES THE PLANT MATERIAL COME FROM IN YOUR HERBAL SUPPLEMENTS?
Rich Mountain Health Line operates a significant farm in Central Oregon, cultivating many of the plants used in our certified organic and biodynamic herbal supplements. While we strive to grow as much as possible ourselves, the specific needs of certain medicinal plants require global sourcing. We search globally for the highest quality, most potent certified organic plant material. Rigorous testing is conducted on all potential materials to ensure they meet our strict quality standards. For details about our quality control and testing practices, please visit our Quality Control page.
HOW CAN I BE SURE YOUR CAPSULES CONTAIN WHAT YOU SAY?
We closely monitor the weight of capsules throughout each production run to maintain strict weight consistency. Ingredients are precisely measured based on their therapeutic value, validated by scientific research.
IS YOUR FACILITY GLUTEN-FREE AND PEANUT-FREE?
Yes.
DO YOUR PRODUCTS CONTAIN STEARATES?
No. Our encapsulated supplements are free from stearates, such as magnesium stearate or stearic acid, which are commonly used as lubricants. We prioritize natural ingredients without fillers or additives, even if it slows our production process.
HOW ARE YOUR BULK HERBS PACKAGED?
Our bulk herbs, whether whole, powdered, or cut-and-sift, are packaged in resealable, food-grade plastic bags designed to preserve freshness and maintain the integrity of the plants by controlling oxygen permeability and protecting against external chemical exposure.
WHAT DOES NON-GMO MEAN ON YOUR LABEL?
GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organisms. As a certified organic and biodynamic company, Rich Mountain Health Line ensures all our products are non-GMO, adhering to natural growing practices. The most reliable way to avoid GMOs is to look for products labeled as certified organic or certified biodynamic.
WHY ARE SOME OF YOUR ENCAPSULATED PRODUCTS NOT LABELED AS ORGANIC?
We adhere strictly to organic labeling laws, which prevent us from labeling a product as “organic” on the front panel if less than 70% of the ingredients, including the capsule, are organic.
Country of Origin
WHAT IS THE COUNTRY OF ORIGIN FOR MY PRODUCT?
The origin of our raw materials varies based on the specific herb, time of year, and last harvest, among other factors. Consequently, our herbs may come from multiple locations around the world. Each of our bottled products includes a Certificate of Authenticity on the product page, where you can find the listed country or countries of origin. If you have questions about a specific bottle, please contact us with the lot number on the bottle, and we will provide the specific country of origin for the herb.
WHAT IS THE COUNTRY OF ORIGIN FOR BULK HERBS?
For the most accurate and current information on the sourcing of our bulk herbs, please contact us directly.
Testing & Quality Control
DO YOU TEST FOR HEAVY METALS, INCLUDING LEAD?
Absolutely! At Rich Mountain Health Line, we conduct rigorous testing for heavy metals, including arsenic, cadmium, and lead, using graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. We uphold some of the strictest quality standards in the industry. It’s important to note that lead naturally exists in all soil, which means plants may absorb lead throughout their growth. We ensure that our products are safe and contain the lowest possible levels of heavy metals, including lead.
WHAT ELSE DO YOU TEST FOR?
We thoroughly evaluate our plant materials for foreign matter and aflatoxins, which are harmful compounds. For more detailed information on our testing protocols and quality control measures, please visit our Quality Control page [link here].
DO YOU IRRADIATE OR FUMIGATE ANY OF THE INGREDIENTS USED IN YOUR PRODUCTS?
No, we do not irradiate or fumigate any of the ingredients used in our products, including herbs, teas, and spices. We are committed to providing products that are as natural and untouched as possible to ensure their purity and quality.
Whole Plant vs Standardized Extract
WHICH IS BETTER? WHOLE HERBS OR STANDARDIZED EXTRACTS?
At Rich Mountain Health Line, we generally favor using whole herbs because we believe that nature knows best. Whole herbs contain all the constituents of the plant—sometimes hundreds in a single plant. We value the synergistic activity of the entire plant, recognizing that the complex interactions of its many components often enhance its overall therapeutic effect. Whole herbs have been used successfully for thousands of years, whereas research on standardized extracts is relatively recent and often sponsored by the extract manufacturers themselves. We grow and harvest many of our certified organic and biodynamic plants at the ideal time for optimum potency and employ High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) tests to ensure the potency and activity of the active constituents.
EXPLAIN THE USE OF STANDARDIZED EXTRACTS IN SOME OF THE ENCAPSULATED HERB PRODUCTS?
While we generally advocate for the use of whole herbs, there are instances where standardized extracts are advantageous. This is particularly true for herbs where research strongly supports their safety and efficacy. In such cases, we blend whole herbs with standardized extracts to enhance the effectiveness of our products while maintaining a connection to natural healing traditions. This approach allows us to provide a potent, effective product that remains true to our commitment to natural, holistic health.
Dosage Information
HOW MUCH IS A DOSE?
Our product labels include the recommended dosage, which is typically based on an adult of average weight (150 pounds). Dosages may vary depending on factors such as your size, the specific health issue, and the desired strength of the supplement. Our dosage recommendations are intended as a general guideline.
HOW IS A DOSAGE DETERMINED?
The recommended dosage is calculated based on an adult of average weight (150 pounds) and is guided by clinical and/or historical evidence. Most medicinal herbs take time to become effective, so patience is key.
CAN I GIVE MY YOUNG CHILDREN THE HERBAL EXTRACTS THAT AREN’T SPECIFICALLY PART OF YOUR KIDS LINE?
Our herbal liquids are safe for both adults and children. To adjust the dosage for children, we recommend using Clark’s Rule, which is based on the child’s body weight in pounds. For example, to find a child’s dose: Adult dose × (child’s weight in pounds / 150) = Child’s dose.
CAN I TAKE YOUR HERBAL SUPPLEMENTS INDEFINITELY?
Generally, it’s advisable not to take medicinal herbal supplements continuously for long periods without a break. Information about the recommended duration for using our supplements can be found on our product labels and website.
ARE YOUR HERBAL SUPPLEMENTS SAFE FOR YOUNG CHILDREN?
We offer a specific line of products formulated for children aged 2-12. For other products, please use Clark’s Rule to determine the appropriate dosage for your child.
ARE YOUR SUPPLEMENTS SAFE FOR THE ELDERLY?
Elderly individuals should use caution when taking herbal supplements. Typically, one-half to two-thirds of the recommended adult dose is sufficient for older adults.
HOW CAN I DETERMINE THE DAILY DOSAGE OF AN HERBAL SUPPLEMENT?
Herbs are most effective when taken consistently throughout the day. If taking the recommended three doses daily is inconvenient, try dividing them into two doses. For acute conditions, increasing the frequency can enhance the herb’s effectiveness.
CAN I TAKE MEDICINAL HERBAL SUPPLEMENTS WITH FOOD?
Refer to our product labels for specific instructions. Most herbs are best taken on a slightly empty stomach, about an hour after eating if taken with a meal.
WHEN IT SAYS TO TAKE WITH FOOD, HOW MUCH FOOD DO I NEED TO EAT?
A small amount of food is sufficient; there’s no need to eat a full meal.
WHAT IF THIS IS MY FIRST TIME TAKING THIS HERBAL SUPPLEMENT?
If you have multiple allergies or sensitivities, start with a quarter of the recommended dose and gradually increase to the full dose.
HOW DO I KNOW WHICH FORM OF HERBAL SUPPLEMENT IS BEST?
The choice between liquid, powder, or fresh whole herb depends on the specific herb and your personal preference. Each form has its advantages, depending on the herb’s characteristics and your convenience needs.
IS THERE A DIFFERENCE IN STRENGTH BETWEEN CAPSULES AND LIQUID EXTRACT?
The main difference is the carrier (alcohol or glycerin versus the capsule). Liquids may be absorbed more quickly, but capsules provide the benefits of the whole herb, including fiber.
CAN I TAKE ALL THE CAPSULES TOGETHER OR SHOULD I SPACE THEM OUT?
If the label recommends multiple doses per day, it’s best to spread them out to maintain a consistent effect throughout the day.
CAN I OPEN THE CAPSULE AND MIX IT WITH MY FOOD OR WATER?
Yes, although capsules can be messy to open. If you have difficulty swallowing capsules, consider our liquid herbal extracts, which can be easily mixed into water, tea, or taken directly.
